What a Blind ASTM Study Found on Cost
AMSOIL commissioned an independent, third-party lab to test 10 major synthetic 5W-30 oils, including Pennzoil Ultra, against Signature Series, with samples coded to eliminate bias and tested in random order. The clearest, most directly comparable number to come out of it is annual cost, based on each oil’s actual drain interval and real 2013 retail pricing. The honest caveat: testing was completed in February 2013, so it reflects those specific batches, not necessarily any reformulations since.

Where Pennzoil Is a Reasonable Choice
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is a legitimate full synthetic, not a corner-cut product. It’s a reasonable choice for:
- Drivers who want dexos1 Gen 3 approval specifically and prefer buying at a nearby parts store or big-box retailer
- Owners planning to stay well under their factory drain interval anyway, where the extended-mile warranty program isn’t a deciding factor
- Drivers who don’t want the paperwork and conditions tied to Pennzoil’s extended-drain warranty and are comfortable following their owner’s manual’s standard schedule instead
Common Questions
Does Pennzoil really offer a 20,000-mile drain interval?
Only under specific conditions. Pennzoil’s Limited Lubrication Warranty requires exclusive Pennzoil Ultra Platinum use, a premium filter, topping off every 5,000 miles, an engine under 125,000 miles and less than 72 months old, and formal enrollment with receipts on file. Miss any condition and the standard owner’s manual interval applies instead. AMSOIL’s 25,000-mile interval doesn’t require enrollment or paperwork.
Is PurePlus really full synthetic?
Yes. PurePlus converts natural gas into a Group III+ base oil, which qualifies as full synthetic under current industry standards, even though it’s chemically distinct from AMSOIL’s Group IV PAO base. Both are legitimate full synthetic approaches with different base-stock chemistry.
Does switching to AMSOIL void my warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your standard factory warranty simply for using a different oil brand, provided it meets the required API specification and viscosity grade. That’s separate from any brand-specific extended-drain warranty program, which naturally requires staying on that brand’s product.
Can I mix Pennzoil and AMSOIL?
Both are compatible with other synthetic and conventional oils, so mixing won’t damage your engine. For best results, and to keep any extended-drain warranty program intact, drain fully and refill with one product rather than topping off a mixed fill.
