The Fundamentals
What Octane Rating Actually Measures
The number on a US or Canadian gas pump (87, 89, 91, 93, and so on) is the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), calculated as the average of two separate lab measurements: the Research Octane Number (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON), or (R+M)/2. That’s different from Europe, where pump labels typically show RON alone, a number that reads several points higher for the same fuel. If you’re comparing a US or Canadian octane figure to a European one, they’re not the same scale.
Octane rating doesn’t measure “power” or energy content directly, it measures a fuel’s resistance to knock: uncontrolled, early ignition of the fuel-air mixture before the spark plug fires. Does an Octane Booster Actually Add Horsepower?
It depends entirely on whether your engine is knock-limited in the first place, and this is the part most octane booster marketing glosses over.
- If your engine is knock-limited (a turbocharged or supercharged engine, a high-compression build, or a tuned engine whose ECU pulls ignition timing back when it detects knock), raising the octane rating can let the ECU run more aggressive timing, which genuinely can recover real power and throttle response.
- If your engine isn’t knock-limited (most stock, naturally aspirated daily drivers already running the fuel their manufacturer specified), an octane booster generally does very little.
