Traditional port fuel injection sprays fuel behind the intake valve, so every time the engine runs, fuel physically washes over the back of that valve, which helps keep it relatively clean as a side effect of normal operation.

Gasoline direct injection (GDI), increasingly common on modern engines, sprays fuel straight into the combustion chamber instead, bypassing the intake valve entirely. That means the valve never gets the cleaning action port injection provides for free, and GDI engines are structurally more prone to intake valve carbon buildup as a result. An in-tank fuel injector cleaner works through the fuel system, injectors and combustion chamber, it has no path to reach the back of an intake valve on a GDI engine at all. If a GDI engine is showing symptoms that trace back to intake valve deposits specifically (rough idle, hesitation, that don’t respond to an in-tank treatment), the actual fix is a different service entirely, typically walnut-shell media blasting or a dedicated intake cleaning procedure, not another bottle in the tank.
